It’s always rewarding to have positive reactions to newspaper articles
that feature the topic of historic preservation. The February 1,
2011 edition of the CITY newspaper included a feature
story about historic industrial buildings/their
historic significance/challenges for re-use/examples of redevelopment,
in particular, the fate of one c. 1910s complex on Chili Ave. in
the city’s 19th ward.
Much of
the background info for that extensive article was provided by
LS staff via a long phone conversation with the writer. That article
was seen by
radio talk show host Bob Smith at WXI/1370 AM - who has a personal
interest in this type of building/industrial complex. He called this
morning & invited
me to come discuss this topic on his daily mid-day program on:
FEBRUARY 16, 2011 in the live broadcast segment from 1:06-1:57 p.m.
Bob has included discussions about historic preservation on previous programs,
with topics such as the recent Midtown Plaza project/redevelopment, national
pharmacy chains/development pressures/community repercussions, regional
planning & the benefits of preservation.
I also suggested contacting
Pittsford Mayor Bob Corby as another on-air participant, as he
was recently included (by invitation) as the only municipal official at
a National Trust-sponsored
symposium on this topic - industrial buildings/complexes/redevelopment
- which was held at the Rockefeller estate, “Kykuit” in the
Hudson Valley. Trained as an architect & also a preservation planner,
Bob has been involved with two major redevelopment projects in the village
of Pittsford (along the canal) involving extensive complexes of 19th & 20th
century industrial buildings, one of which has significant environmental
(“brownfield”) issues.
This is a live broadcast with “call-in” participation from
the public. It’s always an excellent venue for promoting historic
preservation (rehab opportunities, Natl. Register, tax credits, etc.) and
our programs & events (i.e. the Annual Preservation Conference on April
30).
